The House of Histories is famous as a space for constantly changing exhibitions reflecting today’s current affairs. However, the House of Histories can also boast another gem – the Ethnography vault and Exhibition of the National Museum of Lithuania, presenting thousands of valuable exhibits, is located on the basement floor of the building. Its eight halls host a collection accumulated over more than 100 years. The artifacts stored here reveal the identity of the Lithuanian rural people who lived 200 or more years ago, immortalized in architecture, home interiors, everyday life, crafts and businesses. How did these people live, how did they perceive the world around them, how did they feel? How did they create the coziness of their homes? How did they solve existential questions? What worldview and values do the signs and symbols decorating the exhibits reveal? Are they still recognizable and understandable to us?
